The country recently unveiled an energy transition and investment plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2060, updating its previous target from 2070 and committing to a USD 550 billion opportunity that promises to reshape the nation's energy landscape. The National Energy Transition Framework (2022-2070) aims to decarbonize the energy sector as part of commitments under the Paris Agreement, with provisions ensuring that women, youth, and persons with disabilities are included in this massive transformation. - [When Climate Disasters Strike: The Forgotten Voices of Ghana’s Disabled Community](https://www.kasaghana.org/when-climate-disasters-strike-the-forgotten-voices-of-ghanas-disabled-community): The floodwaters came at night, as they often do. In bedrooms across Ghana's rural communities, persons with disabilities lay helpless as rising waters crept toward their homes. Some couldn't see the danger approaching. Others couldn't move quickly enough to escape. Many had never received the early warnings that might have saved them. When morning came, those who survived did so only through the mercy of neighbors who happened to be nearby. - [Kasa’s efforts in restoring mangrove forests to mitigate coastal erosion.](https://www.kasaghana.org/kasa-efforts-in-restoring-mangrove-forest-to-mitigate-coastal-erosion): One of the evidence of climate change is rising temperatures which impact the sea and oceans in various ways. One is melting polar ice which leads to expansion of oceans which in turn encroach on lands such as Keta. Secondly, the high temperatures which are stored in the water exacerbates water acidity which then degrades coral reefs and even mangroves; which act as sea defence. Cases such as Keta’s can be observed world over, in coastal areas. - [Success story: Non- state actors in Ghana finally part of the NDC framework](https://www.kasaghana.org/success-story-non-state-actors-in-ghana-finally-part-of-the-ndc-framework): What started out as an effort to align non-state actors such as not for profit organisations, Civil Society Organisations and enterprises to government action has led to the Government of Ghana expanding its Nationally Determined Contributions(NDC) Framework to accommodate climate change action by these institutions. - [Kasa Newsletter 2024](https://www.kasaghana.org/kasa-newsletter-2024): Kasa Initiative works in natural resources and environmental governance, with a mission to address and reduce the impacts of climate change on daily life. For those of us in the Global South, climate change is not an abstract concept but a pressing reality. Although we contribute minimally to global emissions, our economy and infrastructure are highly vulnerable. Farmers face reduced rainfall, forests are depleted for mineral extraction, and coastal communities grapple with rising sea levels. - [15th Annual NRE Sector Review Forum](https://www.kasaghana.org/15th-annual-nre-sector-review-forum): Every year, for fifteen years Kasa has been bringing together key actors in the Natural Resources and Environment Governance sector to deliberate on the development in the sector and gaps identified while recommending policy reforms to state actors. This year, Kasa partnered with UK-Ghana Gold programme to implement the 15th annual NRE sector review forum which had participation from state and non-state actors. Under the theme:confronting the scourge of illegal mining; required policy change and the role of political commitment, the seven Kasa coalitions converged to present their findings. For two days on 3rd and 4th December 2024, participants from member coalitions converged with updates, research material and policy reform proposals. Kasa Initiative Ghana is a platform for Civil society Organisations working in water, mining, fisheries, land, climate change and environment, forestry and oil and gas. Kasa with support from well constituted coalitions is able to engage stakeholders and influence policy processes by offering valuable recommendations informed by its interactions with various actors and communities. The NRE Forum then offers a chance for all coalitions to not only update each other on various initiatives undertaken but also address stakeholders in unison. The 15TH Forum’s aim was to shed light on the ravages of illegal mining on various aspects of day to day life such as availability of water and impacts of climate change. With mining expedition encroaching in forests, water - [Strengthening Non-State Actors Climate Change Reporting](https://www.kasaghana.org/strengthening-non-state-actors-climate-change-reporting-2): Kasa Initiative Ghana through the Sustainable Development Goals Grants awarded by the Center for Democratic Development(CDD) is working to strengthen climate reporting by non-state actors. Through approaches such as capacity strengthening workshops, media appearances, stakeholder engagement with persons from the media, CSO and advocacy groups, Kasa Initiative Ghana aims to improve visibility of climate change related issues on the public domain in Ghana. - [Press statement: Joint Legal Action Against the Government of Ghana Regarding LI2462](https://www.kasaghana.org/press-statement-joint-legal-action-against-the-government-of-ghana-regarding-li2462): We, the undersigned environmental and civic organizations, are pleased to announce that we today have filed a Writ of Summons and an Application for an Interlocutory Injunction in the High Court, against: - [Press Statement: JOINT CIVIL ACTION AGAINST GALAMSEY](https://www.kasaghana.org/press-statement-joint-civil-action-against-galamsey): 11TH September 2024, Accra.  RESPONSE FOR POISONED RIVERS URGENTLYNEEDED  - [REDD+ Strategy: Mitigating Forest Degradation and Deforestation in Ghana](https://www.kasaghana.org/redd-strategy-mitigating-forest-degradation-and-deforestation-in-ghana): ReDD+ or fully know as reducing emission from deforestation and forest degradation with the + signifying the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks is a United Nations framework that aims to mitigate climate change by conserving forests. This is mainly by giving incentives to countries with large tree cover to not cut down their trees. Apart from greenhouse emissions by agriculture, transport and mining among others, cutting down trees releases carbon stored in their trunks when cut down. Thus deforestation aggravates an only worse situation of rising temperatures: increased greenhouse gasses including carbon which trap heat from the sun and re-radiate it on the earth surface. - [Nationally Determined Contributions(NDCs) – What are they?](https://www.kasaghana.org/national-determined-contributionsndcs-what-are-they): National determined contributions are climate action plans that countries develop to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change.  - [Illegal mining is getting out of hand, intervene – Nyankrom Queen mother to government](https://www.kasaghana.org/illegal-mining-is-getting-out-of-hand-intervene-nyankrom-queen-mother-to-government) - [CSO Forum: Capacity Strengthening on Ghana NDCs Review Process](https://www.kasaghana.org/cso-forum-capacity-strengthening-on-ghana-ndcs-review-process): Ghana is currently reviewing its National Determined Contribution framework 2.0 in preparation for the 3.0 framework. The review process is meant to allow governments to update climate commitments with either  targets, timelines, and a set of actions across priority sectors. - [GHANA NDC REVIEW PROCESS AND CSOs INCLUSION](https://www.kasaghana.org/ghana-ndc-review-process-and-csos-inclusion): The UNFCCC allows for Parties to review their Climate Change commitments towards Global emissions reduction communicated through their NDCs. Therefore, Ghana as a party to the convention is preparing for this exercise scheduled to be completed within the next seven (7)months.  - [ENERGY TRANSITION – COST, OPPORTUNITIES & POLICY OPTIONS FOR GHANA](https://www.kasaghana.org/energy-transition-cost-opportunities-policy-options-for-ghana): Ghana is headed towards election and this creates an opportune moment for political parties to consult stakeholders on pressing issues that influence citizens. Some of this issues are Natural resources and environment with climate change mitigation paramount. - [CARBON MARKET FORUM](https://www.kasaghana.org/carbon-market-forum): In collaboration with the Climate Change Unit of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and IDH Trade, Kasa Initiate hosted a forum on Ghana Carbon Policy Dialogue.. With the world climate change actors advocating for net zero emission, dialogues on how governments can achieve such targets and adopt green strategies are crucial. The forum which had CSOs and other stakeholders in the NRE sector aimed at aligning actors with the government on the country's carbon framework and creating awareness among stakeholders especially Forest Sector actors and CSOs on Ghana’s efforts to mitigate climate change through carbon finance. - [Mangrove Conservation through Education, Reforestation and Policy Advocacy (MACERPA)](https://www.kasaghana.org/mangrove-conservation-through-education-reforestation-and-policy-advocacy-macerpa-2): Mangrove Conservation through Education, Reforestation and Policy Advocacy (MACERPA) - [14th CSOs Annual Natural Resources and Environment Review Forum](https://www.kasaghana.org/14th-csos-annual-natural-resources-and-environment-review-forum): 2024 being an election year for Ghana, it is imperative for CSOs in the National Resource and Environment sector to outline their priorities in order to influence the NRE sector Policies and Ghana’s development frameworks. To this effect, Kasa initiative Ghana organized its 14th CSOs annual natural resources and environment review forum which engaged CSOs in Natural Resources, Environmental governance and climate change thematic areas. The forum offered a platform for CSOs to outline related sector priorities and recommendations for sustainable development that would be incorporated into political party manifestos going into the election 2024. - [Environment Manifesto 2024](https://www.kasaghana.org/environment-manifesto-2024): Ghana’s once vibrant socio-ecological landscapes, characterized by pristine river basins, expansive forest cover in both reserved and non reserved areas, flourishing marine ecosystems, and thriving wetlands, peatlands, and mangroves, are currently facing an unprecedented level of depletion. A critical state previously unforeseen in Ghana’s history poses significant threat to the nation’s socio-economic development, which is heavily reliant on its natural resources. The World Bank’s 2020 Country Environment Analysis report has underscored the pivotal role natural resources play in Ghana’s economic growth. However, the report also emphasizes that unchecked environmental unsustainability could impede this growth. The evidence of such unsustainability is glaringly manifesting in the destruction of forests, land, and water. The destructions are due to unregulated mining practices, disregarding existing safeguards for community needs and lacking effective enforcement and compliance measures. This has resulted in a substantial loss of water provisioning services, giving rise to health issues in mining communities, negatively impacting downstream water users, and exposing people to contaminated foods and lands. - [Towards a holistic national climate change reporting for Ghana – CSOs contribution](https://www.kasaghana.org/towards-a-holistic-national-climate-change-reporting-for-ghana-csos-contribution): Kasa Initiative Ghana in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) and other CSO stakeholders are in the process of developing a CSO’s specific climate change reporting mechanism that feeds into the National Climate Reporting Process (National Communications). As part of this process, the EPA has reviewed the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)implementation  reporting framework that now captures CSOs contribution. As a follow up to these activities, CSOs in the Agriculture, Forestry and Land use sector are providing inputs to feed into the national reporting process 2024  for submission to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). - [Kasa Initiative Ghana Stakeholder Engagement Forum](https://www.kasaghana.org/kasa-initiative-ghana-stakeholder-engagement-forum): Kasa Initiative Ghana Stakeholder Engagement Forum - [Civil Society Actors Contribution to a Wholistic National Climate Change Report in Ghana](https://www.kasaghana.org/civil-society-actors-contribution-to-a-wholistic-national-climate-change-report-in-ghana): Kasa Initiative Ghana in partnership with other CSO Stakeholders organized two (2) engagements with the Climate Change Focal Persons at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the 29th of September 2023 and the 20th of October 2023 respectively to meet the above objective.
